Without going into too much detail, here’s what I believe [cue music]: I believe in the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I am a zionist who believes in Israel’s right to exist within secure boundaries–and I feel that view is in no way incompatible with supporting the rights and aspirations of the Palestinians. I am dismayed that segments of the political left (whose views I frequently share) have become so consumed with anti-Americanism and anti-Israelism that they have become apologists for theorcratic fascism and Arab authoritarianism.
Above all else, I believe in David Ben Gurion’s maxim that Israel should be a state like any other. In my mind, that means that the Israeli government–like any other government–should never be immune to criticism. Yet, at the same time, this also means that Israel should not be disproportionately criticized, singled out, or blamed for every malady that pervades the Middle East.
